About Historic Downtown Pembroke
Welcome to the Pembroke Downtown Development Commission, which in essence is a BIA (Business Improvement Area).
Our Vision
The PDDC has a twofold mandate:
• To oversee the improvement, beautification and maintenance of municipally owned land, buildings and structures in the area beyond that provided by the municipality generally, and
• To promote the area as a business and shopping district.
What is the PDDC?
The PDDC is a geographic area in this municipality, basically the downtown core which takes in from McKay Street to Christie Street and Lake Street to Isabella Street. We have a board of management which is an organization set up to provide business promotion and improvement functions.
The PDDC is local business people and property owners joined together with the support of the City of Pembroke, to organize, finance and carry out physical improvement and promote economic development in the downtown core. City Council is the body responsible for approving the budget of the PDDC. There are now more than 240 BIA’s in place across the province. They vary in size from 60 businesses and property owners to more than 2,000. Presently the PDDC has over 200 members.
The PDDC relies on it’s members as a self-help approach to revitalizing, strengthening and improving the downtown. Through the members input and support the downtown continually improves and prospers.
What is the purpose of the PDDC?
The main purpose of the PDDC is to revitalize and maintain a dynamic local neighbourhood and to promote the area as a business or shopping destination. While a major goal of revitalization and retention is to encourage both local residents and others to spend their shopping dollars within the local commercial district, all businesses and residents in the area may benefit as well.
Revitalization and maintenance create a cleaner, safer and more congenial atmosphere that benefits all local businesses. It also benefits professional service firms, whose clientele can enjoy the local atmosphere as part of their trip to the doctor, dentist, lawyer or accountant. The same is true for entertainment and dining establishments which benefit from the increase in local traffic and the improved atmosphere that results from the presence of the PDDC.
